A Beginner’s Guide to Cooking Steak: Two Methods to Try

If you want to be a master of the grill, you should first learn how to make the perfect steak. You need to produce a perfectly seared crust and complement it with a deliciously juicy middle.

It's not surprising that many home cooks feel a little intimidated by the prospect of cooking the perfect steak. However, with research and some practice, this goal will be easily achievable.

To get you started, here is a brief guide to cooking the perfect steak on the grill.

How to Prepare Steak for Grilling

1. Season the Meat

You will need to season the meat before grilling it. You can use a variety of different spices and herbs, but salt and pepper are usually all that is needed.

2. Remove the Meat from the Fridge

The next step is to remove the meat from the fridge so that it can come to room temperature. Removing it from the fridge 30 minutes before cooking will help ensure that it cooks evenly.

3. Pat the Steak Dry before Grilling

If you want to get a nice sear on your steak, it is important to pat it dry before grilling. This will help remove any excess moisture from the surface of the meat and allow the heat to better penetrate the steak.

How to Grill Steak

1. Direct Grilling Steak

There are two main ways of grilling steak. The first one is direct grilling. With this method, you will be grilling the steak directly over the heat source. This is best for thinner cuts of steak that are no more than an inch thick.

To directly grill your steak, start by heating up your grill to high heat. Then, make sure your steaks are at room temperature before cooking them. Season them with salt and pepper (or any other seasoning you like), and then place them on the grill.

Grill each side for about three to five minutes, or until they reach the desired level of doneness. Once they are cooked to your liking, remove them from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.

2. Reverse Searing Steak

The second method for grilling steak is known as reverse searing. This method is best for thicker cuts of steak, such as a ribeye or New York strip.

To reverse sear your steak, start by heating up your grill to low heat. Then, season your steaks with salt and pepper (or any other seasoning you like). Place the steaks on the grill and cook them for about 60 to 90 minutes, or until they reach an internal temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once they have reached this temperature, remove them from the grill and increase the heat to high. Sear each side of the steak for about one to two minutes, or until they reach the desired level of doneness.

Once they are cooked to your liking, remove them from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.

Valuable Tips for Cooking Delicious Grilled Steak

1. Don’t Walk Away

If you're grilling steak, don't walk away! Stay close to the grill so you can keep an eye on your steak and make sure it's cooking evenly. If you need to step away for a minute, use a timer to remind yourself to come back and check on your steak.

2. Resting Is Critical

After you've grilled your steak, it's important to let it rest for a few minutes before cutting into it. This will help the steak retain its juices and stay tender and juicy. Simply place your grilled steak on a plate or cutting board and let it rest for three to five minutes before cutting into it.

3. Know Your Steak

Before cooking your grilled steak, take some time to learn about different types of beef and their flavor profiles. This will help you choose the right cut of meat for your meal and cook it to perfection.

Final Thoughts

There are two methods for cooking steak that beginners can try. Both methods can produce delicious results, so it is up to the cook to decide which one to use.
